Charlottenburg Palace impresses with its size and splendour. Originally built as a small garden and leisure palace in the 17th century, it served as a popular summer residence for seven generations of Hohenzollerns. Today it has an extensive park with ponds, an orangery and many outbuildings. It is the largest palace complex in Berlin. For 12 € admission, you can visit the entire complex, including a porcelain cabinet, the palace chapel or the baroque dormitory of Frederick I. The palace also shines with its romantic Christmas market from the end of November. Right in front of the historic castle backdrop, you can stroll through the many stalls selling handcrafted jewellery, silk scarves or culinary specialities until Boxing Day. A heated tent in the middle of the Christmas market invites you to stay awhile and warm up. Meanwhile, the castle shines in the wintry light of the castle illuminations. Opposite the palace, you will find the internationally renowned Museum Berggruen, named after the collector and art dealer Heinz Berggruen. The museum houses names such as Chagall and Picasso, Klee and Braque, and is considered one of the most important collections of classical modern art in the world.
