Reservoirs in NRW: A worthwhile day trip
The Dhünntal reservoir is the third largest drinking water reservoir in Germany. Watersports are therefore forbidden without exception. Nevertheless, the Dhünntal reservoir is situated in a large, idyllic nature reserve, which offers beautifully laid-out hiking trails. For those who prefer peace and quiet, the Neyetal reservoir is perfect. You don’t meet many tourists here, even on the weekend. There is also a 12 kilometre (7 mile) circular hiking path that runs very close to the shore. The Bevertal reservoir, on the other hand, is used mainly for flood protection. Depending on the water level, the surface area covers up to 200 hectares. There is a lot on offer here as almost all forms of watersports are allowed. Whether swimming, fishing, diving, or sailing – an ordinary swimming lake in Cologne can hardly offer all of that. The Lingesetal reservoir is small in comparison. However, it also offers places to camp and a restaurant. Kitesurfing, sailing, surfing, swimming and boat hire are also possible here. Those who want to escape from Cologne for a few hours in search of a swimming lake will love the Lingesetal reservoir. It is also a popular place to observe wild ducks, grey herons, and other birds.
