In warm weather, a refreshing swim in Lake Starnberg is especially inviting. You’ll find idyllic bathing locations to swim and relax in, for example, in the bathing area Percha, which begins just before Starnberg, particularly well accessible to visitors from Munich. On the eastern shore you can find the bathing area of Ambach, which also includes a parking lot with about 2,000 spots. At the southern end, Seeshaupt offers you a great beach with swimming opportunities. But the most famous recreational area on Lake Starnberg can be found in Feldafing/Possenhofen. Several bathing jetties, restaurants, barbecue areas and volleyball fields provide a pure holiday feeling. It’s also possible to surf, dive or sail. At all mentioned bathing locations there are also restaurants, snack bars and kiosks.

Culture on the lakeside

If you prefer to stay on land or if the weather is not playing along, you can play golf, go hiking, cycling or sightseeing around Lake Starnberg. One highlight is Possenhofen Castle in Pöcking, a good 6 kilometres (3 miles) from Starnberg. The famous and popular Austrian Empress Elisabeth, better known as Sissi, once lived here. Also worth a visit is the Buchheim Museum of Phantasy in Bernheim, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Starnberg on the southern part of the east lakeside.

Route and parking possibilities

Starnberg, located at the northern tip of the lake of the same name, can be reached from Munich in only 25 kilometres (15 miles). In average traffic, you can reach your destination within about half an hour. The fastest way to do this is to drive there directly via the A952 highway. Arriving at the lake in Starnberg, you can find numerous parking facilities; for example, there’s the Rathaus parking garage in the Hauptstaße or the parking garage called See Arkaden in the Maximilianstraße. Further parking facilities are available, for example, in the Haderbräu car park on the western shore of Lake Starnberg.
