Getting around Paris

Public transport in Paris

From Notre-Dame to Montmartre, Paris is often compared to an open-air museum with its historic landmarks, monumental squares, and refined "grand boulevards". The French capital enchants its visitors with its unique flair, elegance and famous attractions. However, between restricted traffic zones, construction works and bans, it can be tricky to get around the city. To help you get to your destination, we have prepared a list of the best public transports to get around Paris stress-free.

Subway

With over 214 km of track and 303 stations, the Paris's Metro serves 16 lines making it the second busiest metro system in Europe. Fast and affordable, it's a very convenient way to hop from one arrondissement to another. Operating every day from 6 AM to 12:45 AM (from 6 AM to 1:45 AM on Fridays and Saturdays), there's a wide variety of ticket options – from one-way tickets to one-day, weekly, monthly and travel passes. Dating back to 1900, certain metro stations are real works of art like Porte Dauphine designed in Art Nouveau style by Hector Guimard. The Paris Metro being one of the oldest transport networks unfortunately means that certain stations can be difficult to access for persons with impaired mobility.

Tram

With 13 lines and around 80 km of tracks, the Paris tram is a pleasant and efficient way to discover the city of lights. However, most Paris tram lines cover the outskirts of the city so not so relevant if you're aiming at discovering Paris' main points of interest. Covering the North-East and South parts of Paris, lines T3a and T3b are the only lines operating within the Paris city limits. The Paris tram service usually goes from 5 AM to 1 AM. Before heading to a tram stop, it's recommended to check the operative status of your particular tram lines as the many construction works in- and outside Paris may disrupt the traffic.

Buses

The bus service has 70 active lines within the city of Paris. However, buses run mainly during daytime from around 7 AM to 12:30 AM. In case you miss the last bus, you can count on the Noctilien, a special night service that operates from 12:30 AM to 5:30 AM from the main transfer hubs. If you choose the bus option, keep an eye on the clock and take into account potential strikes or delays.
